Guest Experience Positions

Zoo Ambassador Volunteer

Year-round position
Time Commitment: One shift per week for at least six months per year
Shifts available: Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays from 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–4:30 p.m. (may vary seasonally)

Zoo Ambassador volunteers enthusiastically assist visitors with questions and wayfinding, provide information on daily events, and ensure each guest has an exemplary zoo visit. Zoo Ambassadors rotate between key areas on grounds, including the Searle Visitor Center and animal buildings, to welcome guests and provide tips for discovering all Lincoln Park Zoo has to offer!

Skills and Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Friendly and approachable demeanor
• Ability to work well both in a team and independently
• Sensitivity to and respect of diverse populations
• Ability to maintain confidentiality about sensitive animal information
• Comfort working in a collaborative environment and ability to adhere to zoo policies, procedures, and guest-service standards
• Ability to communicate with clarity, empathy, and understanding to fellow zoo employees, volunteers, and guests

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; accommodations can be made
• Ability to wear closed-toe shoes
• Comfort in traversing zoo grounds in all weather conditions; accommodations can be made

• Successfully complete a virtual interview with the Volunteer Services department. Please choose a date:

  • Saturday, March 1
• Complete and pass a standard criminal background check
• Attend a day-long on zoo grounds orientation on one of the following dates:
  • Saturday, March 22
  • Friday, March 28
  • Monday, March 31
  • Sunday, April 6
  • Monday, April 14
• Attend and complete all required training courses, which include in-person sessions and online at-your-own-pace courses. Choose one in-person training date:
  • Friday, April 18
  • Saturday, April 26
  • Sunday, May 4
• Complete two shifts with a veteran volunteer to further orient you to your role
